How We Research Products

Throttle Buff’s buying guides are research-based. This page explains exactly how we choose and rank products, so you can judge our recommendations for yourself.

1. We start with what riders are searching for

We pick topics where riders need a clear answer: a specific bike, a specific problem, or a choice between two products.

2. We build a shortlist from current products

We only recommend products that are on sale in the current model year. We check each manufacturer’s site and major retailers to confirm the product is still available and to note discontinued or replaced models.

3. We verify specs at the source

Every number in a guide, such as battery life, intercom range, helmet weight or certification, comes from the manufacturer’s official product page or a standards body. If sources conflict, we say so.

4. We check safety standards

For protective gear we look for recognized certifications, including DOT FMVSS 218, ECE 22.06 and Snell for helmets and EN 17092 or EN 1621 for clothing and armor. Learn more from NHTSA and the Snell Memorial Foundation.

5. We read what owners say

We review owner feedback on retailer sites and rider communities to spot recurring strengths and problems, such as fit issues, water leaks or failures, that spec sheets don’t show.

6. We rank by fit for purpose

Each pick is labeled for a specific rider (for example, best for touring or best budget option). Price is shown in tiers ($ to $$$$) because prices change often.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t claim hands-on testing unless we actually did it, and we say so clearly when we have.
  • We don’t accept payment for rankings.
  • We don’t invent ratings, scores or prices.

Keeping guides current

We review our guides regularly and update them when products are replaced, discontinued or changed. If you spot something out of date, let us know.
