Cardo’s announcement also lists the RPHA 71 and RPHA 71 Carbon, which are missing from Cardo’s current product page. Check your helmet model with your dealer before you buy.
What’s new for HJC riders
HJC helmets have long had a built-in recess for Sena-made units such as the HJC Smart 50B. The HJC PackTalk is the first Cardo mesh unit designed for that recess. It joins the HJC 4X and HJC Spirit, which Cardo and HJC launched earlier. Compared with the Smart 50B, the main changes are:
- Cardo DMC instead of Sena Mesh 2.0. Cardo’s mesh lets riders drop out and rejoin a group automatically. Cardo quotes groups of up to 31, against 6 for the 50B’s Mesh 2.0.
- JBL speakers. The 50B uses Sena HD speakers. The PackTalk uses 40 mm JBL drivers, with a 45 mm upgrade kit available.
- Always-on voice control. Cardo’s Natural Voice Operation responds to spoken commands without pressing a button first.
- Newer Bluetooth and IP67. Bluetooth 5.2 (the 50B has 5.0) and a certified IP67 waterproof rating.
- Shorter range on paper. Cardo quotes up to 1 mile. The 50B is rated up to 1.2 miles in open terrain.
Against Cardo’s own clip-on PackTalk Edge, the HJC version gives up the external mount for a cleaner, flush fit, but keeps the same core features: DMC mesh, JBL audio and voice control.
Who the HJC PackTalk is for
It is for riders who own a compatible HJC, such as the RPHA 91 modular or the RPHA 72 sport-tourer, and whose group rides on Cardo. Larger group rides benefit most from DMC’s self-healing mesh. If your friends use Sena, Cardo’s mesh will not join a Sena Mesh group, so you would need Bluetooth pairing instead. Our Cardo vs Sena guide covers the trade-offs. If you only talk to a passenger, the cheaper HJC 4X does the job.
HJC PackTalk vs HJC 4X, HJC Smart 50B and PackTalk Edge
| System | Intercom | Talk time | US price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cardo HJC PackTalk | DMC mesh, up to 31 riders (Cardo) | Up to 13 h | $419.95 list |
| Cardo HJC 4X | Bluetooth, up to 4 riders, 0.75 mi | Up to 13 h | $299.95 list |
| HJC Smart 50B by Sena | Sena Mesh 2.0, up to 6 riders, 1.2 mi | Up to 13 h | $349.99 |
| Cardo PackTalk Edge (clip-on) | DMC mesh | See our review | $439.95 list |
Cardo HJC 4X: the same JBL speakers, voice control and 13-hour battery, but Bluetooth only for up to four riders and a 0.75-mile range. It is the better buy for two-up riding or a single riding partner.
HJC Smart 50B by Sena: the Sena option for the same recess. It costs less and has Mesh 2.0, but its group size is smaller and it lacks Bluetooth 5.2 and IP67. It makes sense if your group rides on Sena. See our Sena comparison chart for where it sits.
Cardo PackTalk Edge: Cardo’s universal flagship, which clamps or glues to almost any helmet and moves with you to your next one. Our PackTalk Edge vs Sena 60S EVO and PackTalk Edge vs Pro comparisons explain how it stacks up. Shoei owners have a similar choice between the Cardo PackTalk-S and Sena’s new SRL3 Plus.
